I went out this weekend for a little jaunt up-country away from the bustle of Bangkok and into the equally bustling, but far more charming, town of Sam Chook and its celebrated 100 Year Market.
Heaving with people, this is nonetheless a great little excursion to what might be classed as a living museum. They have preserved the quaint old wooden buildings of this key historical trading post, and sell อหาร โบราณ aa-hăan bo-raan (ancient food [not literally!]) as well as lots of chic, retro trinkets and souvenirs.
I highly recommend a day trip if you’re looking for something different for the weekend. In the meantime, brush up on the history of the place with this excerpt from the Sam Chook website.
Look through the vocab then have a go at the reading. Rollover for my translations.

What I really find useful about Hamish’s blog is that he covers Thai living (festivals, culture, times of year) in a timely fashion. For instance, Flood! is totally Thailand now. And if you are interested in the near future, then maybe Mooncake Festival is for you. But my favourite post this month is one I’ve been waiting to link to with a post of my own (time…):Sam Chook 100 Year Market – a little history. [...]
