This Saturday Thailand celebrated its National Children’s Day. Municipal and private enterprises alike held activities and events to recognise and celebrate the importance of children to the present and to the future.
In Bangkok the traffic was typically horrendous as pretty much every family with children poured into the streets to take advantage of what was on offer. So I stayed in and brushed up on my reading.
The excerpt below, taken from trusty Thai Wikipedia, gives a little history of the day. Coincidentally PM Abhisit announced on the day that he intended to have English Wikipedia translated into Thai as a gift to Thai children.

วันเด็กแห่งชาติ เป็นวันสำคัญในประเทศไทยตรงกับวันเสาร์ที่ 2 ของเดือนมกราคมของทุกปี เป็นวันหยุดราชการที่มิได้ชดเชยในวันทำงานถัดไป มีการให้คำขวัญวันเด็กทุกปีโดยนายกรัฐมนตรีที่ดำรงตำแหน่งในขณะนั้น
งานวันเด็กแห่งชาติจัดขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรก เมื่อวันจันทร์แรกของเดือนตุลาคม พ.ศ.2498 ตามคำเชิญชวนของ นายวี.เอ็ม. กุลกานี ผู้แทนองค์การสหพันธ์เพื่อสวัสดิภาพเด็กระหว่างประเทศแห่งสหประชาชาติ เพื่อให้ประชาชนเห็นความสำคัญและความต้องการของเด็ก และเพื่อกระตุ้นให้เด็กตระหนักถึงบทบาทอันสำคัญของตนในประเทศ โดยปลูกฝังให้เด็กมีส่วนร่วมในสังคม เตรียมพร้อมให้ตนเองเป็นกำลังของชาติ

งานวันเด็กแห่งชาติจัดขึ้นทุกปีในวันจันทร์แรกของเดือนตุลาคมจนถึง พ.ศ. 2506 และใน พ.ศ. 2507 ไม่สามารถจัดงานวันเด็กได้ทัน จึงได้เริ่มจัดอีกครั้งในปี พ.ศ. 2508 โดยเปลี่ยนเป็นวันเสาร์ที่ 2 ของเดือนมกราคมเนื่องจากเห็นว่าเป็นช่วงหมดฤดูฝนและเป็นวันหยุดราชการ จนถึงทุกวันนี้

Many thanks to @Thai101 for help with the translation of องค์การสหพันธ์เพื่อสวัสดิภาพเด็กระหว่างประเทศแห่งสหประชาชาติ Information about the organisation can be found here. Incidentally the Thai translation used herein alludes to a connection with the UN by the inclusion of the suffix สหประชาชาติ, but it is not clear that such an affiliation exists.
