On Thursday and Friday in Thailand the temperature dropped dramatically. We had been gearing up for a long hot summer with heat rising into the 30s, then literally overnight a cold front blew in from China bringing with it weather more typical of an autumnal afternoon in England than the tropical sweatbox of Bangkok in the hot season.
But back in 1955 it got even colder.
This old photograph and caption tells of the day it snowed in Chiang Rai. Click on the image to get a better look at the text. You’ll notice that it is a bit old-fashioned (for example เป็น loses its ไม้ไต่คู้), so I have had the text modernised for a bit of seasonally unlikely reading practice.

The Reading
หิมะตกที่เชียงราย
นี่เป็นภาพถ่ายในฤดูหนาวที่จังหวัดเชียงรายเมื่อพ.ศ.2488 วันนั้นเป็นวันที่ 7 มกราคม เวลา 18.00 น.เศษ หลังจากฝนตกเล็กน้อย ลูกเห็บขนาดเล็กและเกล็ดน้ำแข็งบางๆสีขาวๆคล้ายปุยหิมะก็ตกลงมาอย่างมากมาย ดูขาวโพลนไปทั่วแผ่นดิน (ภาพบน) ถ่ายในวันรุ่งขึ้นหลังหิมะตก 14 ช.ม. ที่เห็นเป็นพื้นขาวคือหิมะ (ภาพล่าง) อีก 38 ช.ม.ต่อมา จึงค่อยละลายหมดไป
