Promises, Promises: Part 5 – Bits and Pieces

Welcome to the last in our ‘Promises, Promises’ series looking at the language being used in the campaign posters and slogans of a selection of the political parties vying for a seat in the house of representatives on July 3.

With forty parties in the race we’d still be here this time next year if we covered them all.  So, having done the three biggies and the one with the biggest personality, let’s finish on a mixed bag of promises from the parties who have managed to occupy most of the remaining poster real-estate, at least in downtown Bangkok.

We start with the now infamous anti-campaign from the inaccurately named People’s Alliance for Democracy, then a quick look at PAD’s uneasy bedfellows the New Politics Party.  We then work through a couple of posters from Chart Patana Peua Paendin, and see what Thaksin’s erstwhile right hand man Purachai has to say for his Rak Santi party. We finish up on four posters from smaller parties: 2006 coup leader Sonthi Boonyaratgalin’s Mathabhum party, Chart Thai Patana, an offering from the Git Sangkhom party, and a curious poster (little bigger than a postage stamp) from the Palang Kon Geelaa party (Power of the Althete party).

Promises, Promises: Part 4 – Bhum Jai Thai

We’re back with part four of this series of posts looking at the election promises featured on the forest of placards and posters that has grown up alongside the highways and byways the length and breadth of Thailand.

This post looks at the work of Bhum Jai Thai พรรคภูฒิใจไทย. They have a fairly slick visual theme running through their posters, with quality photographs and promises that speak to their natural audience, what with the Buriram connection and all.

We revisit some of the vocab seen in the posters of the three parties in previous posts, but for such a small body of text there are a lot of interesting new ones. I have chosen to not to go anywhere near the poster with the very curious choice of words. What were they thinking?!

*I’m pretty sure this is euphemistic, using a play on words for the action of swiping your cash card through an ATM and the action of slashing the bark of a rubber tree. Both actions result in cash flow. I don’t think they are literally intending to build ATMs in farms. Happy to be corrected though if anyone knows better.

Promises, Promises: Part 3 – Rak Prathet Thai

Welcome to the third part in our series on the slogans and manifesto promises splashed across roadside posters up and down the country as Thailand prepares to go to the polls.

In this post we look at the work of the inimitable Chuwit Kamolvisit ชูวิทย์ กมลวิศิษฎ์ a relatively recent addition to the political landscape, but one that no one can have failed to have noticed.  After an abortive stint as a MP for the Chart Thai Party and two unsuccessful runs at the governorship of Bangkok, he is now back in the race for a place in Parliament as sole candidate for the Rak Prathet Thai Party พรรครักประเทศไทย.

In case you have missed the whole Chuwit thing, this quote taken from an interview he gave The BangkokPost gives you some idea of his style:

When I asked why [he didn’t have a team of advisers] earlier this week, he said, “I don’t need advice from anyone, I know what I want. I just need their motivation.” Later I asked him what he wanted, to which he replied: “To be on a yacht, with a glass of warm brandy, a beautiful woman and a nice cigar.”

Bangkok By-Election – will the test of democracy test your vocabulary?

The political process in Thailand is a fascinating beast.  On 25 July Bangkok sees its first test of the ballot since the events of May 2010, and so the by-election in Constituency 6 garners more interest than any old common or garden runoff.

Observers will be interested to see how the two major players fair against each other, and in so doing might need the vocabulary prepared here.

The Process

Election: การเลือกตั้ง gaan lêuak dtâng

By-election: การเลือกตั้งซ่อม gaan-lêuak-dtâng-sôm (lit. repair election)

Constituency: เขตเลือกตั้ง kàyt lêuak dtâng

Candidate: ผู้สมัครรับเลือกตั้ง pôo sà-màk ráp-lêuak-dtâng

Campaign (v): หาเสียง hăa sĭang

Campaign (n): การหาเสียง gaan hăa sĭang

Ballot box: บัตรลงคะแนน bàt-long-ká-naen

UK Election – the Thai take

The general election in the UK took place today to much discussion and punditry. The Thai press were as active as any other in their speculation and commentary, and inevitably comparisons were made with the situation in Thailand.

Here is some key vocabulary and some reading practice taken from tweets from @suthichai and @noppatjak this morning.

The Election

Election: การเลือกตั้ง  gaan lêuak dtâng

(Political) party: พรรค (การเมือง) pák (gaan meuang)

Note the use of English words for some very specific vocabulary.  Always nice to have some leaning posts when working your way through tricky new vocab.
